How long have you been surfing?   I've been surfing since I was twelve,  I was always a skater, skated a lot when I was a kid, I bodyboarded and then I just wanted to surf.  I got my first board, it was a  used board, from Fenwick and I kept doing it, I kept trying whenever I could get to the beach, then I got my license and started going more and more.  

you are a world class wave surfer, what are some of the places you have traveled to?  I can't say I'm a world class wave surfer, I like surfing world class waves!.  I've been to New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Fiji, Indonesia, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, and Canada.

and your all time favorite wave is? why?  Hollow Trees in Indo, it's a really challenging right hander reef break and it's challenging but so rewarding. That's what intrigues me, I love reef breaks, but I have many favorite waves.  There are so many waves out there and I like them all buy H Trees (Hollow Trees)  and Raglan in New Zealand, I caught it really good one time. Its hard to just pick one.  (laughs)

what is the key to surfing in different places? Tread lightly and show respect, what I have always enjoyed about surfing and what I have learned about is that you have to be one with the ocean and if I go to a different place I like to study the wave, see how it breaks, and not go out there thinking that I own it.  I respect it and try to take in what I see from other people.  Every wave is different, just got to enjoy the uniqueness of every wave.

Ive heard that if you like to surf and you don’t travel you are not being fair to yourself, do you agree?  I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to travel,and I know that not everybody has that opportunity.  I started traveling in my adult life and it is something that I enjoy, I have set the way I live my life to be able to travel, but the ocean is what you make of it, its a playground no matter where you are and some people have all they need in front of them, and if that satisfies them that's all it matters.  If you can't travel or if you can, you are what you make of what you have.  The moment that you are out surfing  is what counts, whether you are in Delaware or if it is around the world.   You don't have to travel around the world to get surf.

how does one open fully to the ocean, the freedom of just going anywhere in search of waves?   The ocean is a power place, I'm happy I found the ocean, and always know there is  more to it than just the waves, its a whole Eco system, you have to look at as a whole and respect it.  I try to do my part as far as using it as something I love to do, by keeping it clean, respecting the animals that are around it, that is something that Ive gotten into more now that I'm older.  Try to be in balance with the ocean, not just use it for what is worth and disrespect it.  It involves my whole  lifestyle, I try to stay in tune with myself and all my surroundings, just flow.  The ocean is a place that I go to ground myself and get back in balance if I have to. Even if it is just to swim or go body surfing.    

Do you enjoy surfing smaller Delaware waves?   Yeah I do, its funny that you say, cause I think about that all the time when I'm traveling, it keeps everything in perspective, makes me appreciate where I come from and what I have, even going all around world, the waves are not always good and that's how it is here, I like to say every dog has its day, you can go to world class waves or different places in the world and you are not always going to get good waves, but here right at home, underneath your fingertips sometimes it lights up and its a magical session, you really have to be grateful for that.  I feel fortunate that  was raised close to the ocean as supposed of being land lock, I think being able to surf and go in the water every day keeps me in check.   If it works out that I get really good waves at home I'm just as happy if I was getting good waves somewhere else. 

What has been your best experience surfing DE-   My best experience in De would have to be being able to surf in the winter time, putting all the rubber on.  I really feel the waves always get better in the winter and there are not that many people around so I enjoy surfing with a select few, being able to enjoy what it has to offer, the elements that are thrown at you.  Not always catching the best wave but being one with nature in challenging conditions.  I say challenging because the waves in the winter time in Delaware, late fall or early spring,  can be just as challenging as anywhere, you are in with all the elements and have all this rubber on, you can't really function as you normally would, but it just fun to be out.  Finding gems, beautiful beach break barrels. Its here if you want to be committed 

What is your worst experience/ may be biggest wipeout?   I've had a lot of them!  I feel the worst experience is when you are paddling back out and you are digging' for the horizon and the wave is coming and you know its going to break and you try to get underneath of it but it breaks two feet in front of you, picks you up, tosses you around, spits you out, rolls you over, and all the sudden you don't know where you are at.  Those are worst then me falling on a wave.   Sometimes is fun but sometimes its like a roller coaster ride, but you gotta enjoy a good wipe out!

do you do any special training and diets?  I'm really into yoga, I like to stay in tune with my body through yoga and I have my own personal training practices that I do.    I enjoy swimming, I go to the Y in the winter, staying in shape and staying active.  Just staying active everyday even if it is a walk with my dog or getting my heart rate up, I feel that's important.  I try to eat a really healthy diet, try to eat all organic food, you are what you eat"  that's one thing I learned in college , what you put in your body can really affect your mood, performance, and things like that.

what has been the biggest swell you have surfed this year?  I just got back from indo, caught a pretty big swell there, caught some  6-8 foot reef break waves but I was in Chile in March and caught a pretty big swell there, 8' to 10' swell, really big sand bottom points there, where is was really top to bottom, with wet suit on, I would really say in March in Chile are some of the biggest waves I surfed this year.

How was your recent trip to Bali?  Bali is amazing, its not only just the waves.  Bali is so alive and colorful, its a cool culture, they believe in the Yin and the Yang and they try to balance out their life with the good and evil.  I like to take into perspective those same principles in my life.  The people are a reflection of their surroundings and its cool to be in a place that can make you feel so small.   Something that I enjoy about traveling is being in different cultures and see how people live and relate it to where you live, see what they do in their daily lives.  One thing I really like to do when I'm in Bali is get on a moped and go in the rice paddy's early in the morning and I get to see all the people working, basically  going in the middle of it and see how they live their lives on that side of the world.    I don't travel only to surf but I also travel to learn about cultures in other parts of the world.   Makes me think about ways I live my life and what I can to better my self and people around me, just be a better person.

who are some of your  favorite surfers?   I enjoy watching all surfers, and taking a little bit from everybody, but some that I really enjoy surfing and just how they carry themselves, past, present , future.  Dave Rastovich, Slater ever since I was a kid, Slater is the man, and still winning now, he is older than I am, on top of his game at his age, it has a positive influence, you can still do a lot of stuff at any age.    Derek Hynd he is an old soul, he still carrying out the soul surfing in his life and Tom Curren.  Those guys are a big influence on me because they are soul surfers and not caught up on the media of surfing and that's something I try not to get caught up in, like traveling to places that are hyped up and rather going to places that I enjoy, not because its the new spot.  Surfing is a freedom and they reflect that.

you said you skate and do you snowboard?  I love to skate, I started skating before I surfed, I try to skate as much as I can but I just had my meniscus repair this past spring, so I haven't been able to skate in the past year and half, but I have a half pipe in my back yard that really needs some TLC so I'm hoping to get that thing back in order.     I really enjoy snowboarding, I lived out west for a couple of seasons, and I haven been in a couple of years cause of my knee problem but I'm really anxious to get  back on the slopes.

Your thoughts on SUP?  I'm a fan, I have one, I use it more for training in flat water, I take it out in the bay, been out twice this week, since I've been home, I don't have an opinion with surfing with an SUP.  I personally don't like going out in the line up with them, not that I disrespect anyone that does, I do feel they have their place in the line up and certain respects, but I choose not to bring them in the line up, but I do use them , its a great way to enjoy the water , you  get to see a lot of the activity that's going on around you being on top the water like that.     Its a useful tool, and that reminds me of my trade, carpentry, there is a tool for every job, I think you can use that in many respects , certain waves you need the right tool for the job if you don't you can get hurt.  I use that not only in my surfing life but also I use it in my career

Any projects that you are working on?   I'm a contractor by trade, I have a couple renovations going on.  I have also been trying to be more active in the community, I'm a ,member volunteer of MERR, which is the mammal rescue here in Lewes.  And with my clothing sponsor Prana Clothing, when I went to Chile I did a blog spot for all the water pollution issues and the things they have been dealing with like smog etc.   I've been trying to be more active about being respectful towards the ocean  and making people aware that they have to respect it.  Keep it clean and show respect for the animals that call it home.  Ocean awareness!!!

What do you have going on for the rest of the year and 2012?  I'm going to California in the beginning of November, my wife and I are going to take a road trip, gonna go visit my brother in law, he lives in San Francisco, go surf, travel and see some friends and family.  Also hopefully get to Hawaii in the winter time, and  2012 I tentatively I have a plan to go back to Indo in April, but I'm really anxious to seek new places, not just for surfing but for travel,  There are a lot of waves that I want to go find because it was really inspiring to go to South America and see the potential for waves in other places, there are other waves that are untapped that you can find.

anybody you would like to thank?   My beautiful supportive wife that deals with my surfing addiction she is my rock and my best travel partner too.   My parents that have always been supportive of me in everything I do, and everybody that I have met along the way, I've met some of my best friends traveling, and I'm thankful to be here today healthy and happy.  I also want to thank Prana Clothing and Rehoboth Beach Surf Shop.

Sunny Garcia was born in the Westside of Oahu, Hawaii, he is the 2000 ASP WCT World Champion, six time winner of the Hawaiian Triple Crown, and plenty of other wins in his surfing career to fill an entire page. A consistent competitor that has achieved many of his goals and dreams. Garcia is now competing on the WQS again, keep your eyes on him. One of the best surfers in the world, intelligent, real, and like all Hawaiians full of the aloha spirit. I caught up with him while he was in California this past week.


Looking past all contests results, the media etc. How do you feel about being considered one of the best surfers in the world? I don't know, to me I just enjoy surfing, so I don't really think about all the other stuff.


what makes you keep competing? bad habit (laughs) I think cause I still feel like I can win some events but other times I really enjoy competing and having fun, but I think the main reason is probably 'cause I just enjoy it.


What events are you looking forward to this year? We have a surfing event I think in August, I want to say the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th it's called the Surfer Cross, its one day of riding motocross and one day of surfing and you are teamed up with one with one pro motocross guy and one pro surfer and the best over all results from the day of surfing and the day of riding, you get the winner. It's right around the US open in Huntington, we leave the day after that event, I come off surfing the event in Huntington and I compete in the Surfer cross event.


being from Hawaii how important is it to win the Triple Crown? is it more important than the world title? I much rather have world titles, but the next biggest thing is winning the Triple Crown. We have more world champions than Triple Crown champions, so I think to win the Triple Crown as well as the world title is a very important thing.


What is it like to travel and compete with your friends? Is it easier or harder? Depends on which friends you lose to (laughs) there are some friends that you are genuinely happy for them because they won and sometimes they deserve it, and there are some friends that you never want to lose to.


Who are your surfing idols? Dane Kealoha is my favorite surfer of all time and then Mark Occhilupo and Tom Curren are my other two favorite surfers. Occy is one of my favorite people in general.

How important is family life to you? My family is very important to me, it is all about being a family and hanging out, making sure that they are happy everything else comes second to family.

you race motocross but have been getting into off-road car racing? I raced the Lucas Oil off road trucks,I think it was two weeks ago they offered me to race again in a truck but the only problem is the US Open is going on at the same time, as much as I would like to skip the event and go to the truck racing my agent is not quite happy on that one. Hopefully I can get back in the truck in a couple more weeks for the rest of the year and later on. We'll see if they have room for an extra truck for me to race.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that you don't like sand? (laughs) nah I love sand! I just don't like sand on my feet, I'm not the guy, I always tell my wife, if I'm going surfing that's one thing, but I'm not the guy to sit on the beach,(laughs) that's just not me, I go on the beach for one specific reason..... to surf.


What is Surfers Healing Charity? Surfer Healing is were we take the kids with autism surfing, which is a really good thing, the kids get out there and they seem to respond really well in the water, I've been part of that, and I just got involved with the Mauli Ola Foundation it is another foundation were we take kids with Cystic Fibrosis surfing, for some reason the kids that live near the ocean or are near the water seem to do a lot better than the kids that are not around the ocean, I guess the sea weed in the water helps break up the mucus, we have been taking these kids surfing and they have responded really well just being in the ocean. I have been spending a lot of time with the Mauli Ola guys, taking kids surfing, in fact in August we are doing a trip, we are taking a tour bus, and taking kids surfing, we are starting in Texas all the way up through Florida, all the way up the East Coast, and end up in New York.


Whats going on with BYB surfboards? are you part owner? Yeah I'm a part owner in BYB, we are actually just starting to get it back going, we kinda let it go for a little while. We have all the three partners, Albie McGarry, John Glomb and I, all met up yesterday, we brainstormed what we can do to bring the company back, we never really left, we just kind of lag for the past couple of years 'cause everybody has been doing their own thing, so we are really going to try to make a push and bring the company back. We have Pat Mulhern as one of our shapers, he is from the East Coast, and he shapes really good for waves over there, they are really good boards and got some good art work on them.

How many tattoos do you have? My whole right arm is sleeved, half of my left arm is sleeved, three on my back, Hawaiian Islands on my right side, a portrait of a girl on my left side, half of my left shin got tribal tattoos, I think that's it, and I have death and taxes across my chest. Tattoos are about whatever makes a person feel good, you really got to like your tattoos 'cause you are pretty much stuck with them for life.


ever surfed or been to Delaware? No, I haven't even been to DE, I've been to New York, been to Miami


What is some advice you can give to the Delaware surfers, that can help our surf community progress and grow in the right direction.

Just keep surfing, when I was a kid I had so many people telling me, what are you doing? surfers are bums, but surfing has progressed so far and when I just started there was only a handful of top guys making good enough money to live a pretty good life. There are kids now that are sixteen and are making millions. The sport has come a long ways, so if kids are getting into surfing, put your head down and grind it out cause you can make anything possible, even if you are not surfing, you can be anything that you want to be, as long as you put your head down and work really hard. When I was in third grade I was already surfing and I remember saying I'm going to be world champ and my friend was telling me I was full of it, but I knew that's what I wanted and once I started surfing I knew that I wanted to be good at it and I knew that I wanted to be world champ at a really young age, and I always strived to be that even when young, even when I lost the world title I came really close in 95' when I was 25 years old, I thought that I would never get another chance, but I still grind-ed it out, and who would have thought I would have won the world title at 30 yrs old. Here I am at 40 yrs old still doing the tour, I'm not lighting the world on fire by any means right now but I'm still living my dream and still getting paid good money and still having a good time.


Anything else you want to say To all the young aspiring professional surfers, dream big, cause everything is possible in life.

He'e nalu Hawaiian for surfing, is a sport of kings, lava-rock landscape carved with petroglyphs of surfers are evidence of the importance surfing had on Hawaiian culture.  Rothman has the blood of kings, born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, son of surfing royalty Eddie Rothman, founder of the Da Hui, a group of native Hawaiians that protect the culture and enforce surf etiquette in Hawaii.   Makuakai is Jewish-Hawaiian and 100% waterman, started surfing at three years old, surfed Waimea at eight, started tow-in  surfing at thirteen, it is of no surprise that in  2002  at eighteen years old he won the Billabong XXL Big Wave Challenge Award, by catching a 66 foot wave!.

Award-winner,big-wave charger: tow-in or paddle, pro surfer, innovation and evolution of the sport, deep-sea hunter, water patrol work, stunt work, plenty of movies, sponsors, travels around the world, entrepreneur, musician and the list continues.  At 25 years old I’ll have to say, Makua you have it going on!

Got a hold of Makua this past Friday and this is what we talked about.

What's the smallest wave you will surf? when you do you say, it's too small I'm not going out.     I'll surf everything, if its half a foot and that's all there is I'm out there.

I think if you hesitate when a wave is coming you can totally mess up, would you agree? what are your thoughts on hesitation in the water?   Well, hesitation is not a good thing 'cause see you can get very hurt.  If you are going to commit and that's the wave that you want, you better just commit 100%, you have less chance of injuring yourself or someone else if you commit totally, once you hesitate and lock up for that one second that could be the worst mistake you ever made.

What is your life motto?  My life motto?  pure aloha.

How do you unify a surf community like you guys have in Hawaii?  It is just a family you know, a family where everyone is equal, no body is more, no body is less, everybody stands together and believes in the right things, and everything should be fine.

What are some of the goals you would like to achieve in your life?  I just would like to achieve, making people happy, giving back to the community, and working really hard to make a positive impact on where I'm from and just be a real genuine person, that's about it.

Could you leave surfing behind and just focus on acting or modeling?  I would never leave it behind, but if the opportunity arose, and it was paying a lot of money or you know if the price is right, I would go and definitely try my hand at modeling or acting. I could never ever just not surf. (laughs)

I saw a photo online of your garage, you have a lot of boards, how many do you have? um I don't know a few hundred?  wow that's awesome, I have three  (laughs)

Who are your surfing buds, the friends that you go out surfing with every day?

Everyday I surf with Marcus Hickman, Kai Barger, Mason Hoe, TJ Barron,  (asks himself who else?)........ Kawai Lindo, Rico, I have a lot of friends, my causin Saul, Ikaika Kalama, there is like twenty of us that depending on the day we surf together.

Who owns Da Hui clothing line? you or your dad? Do you have a retailer in Delaware?

I think....I'm pretty sure that's online for Delaware, but we have a bunch of things in the works right now where it is going to be distributed pretty largly on the east coast, pretty soon here.   I'm part owner, my father, David Stant, kinda forget the other owners, Kawika Stant.  My dad and myself are the majority owners.

Does music play a big role in your life?   Yes, I'm a really big musician, been playing since I was a kid and I went to Israel and played a really big concert for my first time for thousands of people, a lot of people have been trying to get me to play music, some people wanted me to record, they want to do a CD but my music is kind of just for my family and myself and my enjoyment, maybe one day I might put some of my music out there, but for now it is just for my family in the back yard, my cousin is getting married and he really wants me to play for his wedding, so I will probably play, for an hour or so at his wedding. (laughs)

What are some of the events you are looking forward to in 2010?   I'm looking forward to the World Tour Championships, the Eddie Aikau,  Pipe Line Masters and The Triple Crown, and few select barrel riding events , that's pretty much it.

What's your favorite spot to surf in the whole world?  Hawaii in general, the North Shore, is where I love to be, and it's my life, so yeah basically the North Shore, it's my home and my favorite surf spot.

Do you have a girlfriend?  No I don't.

Do you and Da Hui do a lot for the environment and give back to the community?  Largely, we do huge beach clean ups, we do a bunch of Charity work, we work with all the kids at the hospital, I'm currently one the board members of Mauili Ola, a company that deals with kids with cystic fibrosis and we are always looking out for the land, we participate at rallies, and everything that goes to benefit our land, our island over here.  Anything our club can be involved with that is for the environment we are 100% behind it.

Have you ever surfed Delaware?  No (laughs) I've never even been to Delaware, I would love to come over there and maybe if someone can help put something together, then get a bunch of people, I would love to come out and surf with the people and hang out.  Spread the aloha spirit, and our sport to all the people over there.

What do you think about the movie North Shore?   I was in the movie North Shore!  you were a baby.   Yup, North Shore, is your typical stereotyping of the localism and stuff like that but it is a classic movie, it was what it was.

Was it torturing to answer these questions?  Nah not at all, I enjoyed all of it.

Robert August: Amazing boards, perfect waves and soulful surfing

The August family moved from Arizona to the California coast at the beginning of the 20th century. His father, “Blacky” August was introduced to surfing by good friend and superstar Olympian Duke Kahanamoku. Blacky was a well known surfer and one of the first to surf Redondo Beach. Robert grew up in Huntington Beach; he was an outstanding student in his high school and on his senior year he was elected student body president.
Robert was already appearing in Bruce Brown’s films at age 14, and after high school was chosen to be in “The Endless Summer,” one of the most influential surf movies ever made. He started shaping boards in 1966 while working at Jacobs Surf Shop in Hermosa Beach. At one point, he wanted to be a dentist. He was also a restaurant owner, but always a surfer and an amazing surfboard shaper.
With the reappearance of the long board in the 1990s and “The Endless Summer II” in 1994, Robert was back in the mainstream. He embodies the spirit, adventure and fun of surfing.
I was fortunate enough to ask him some questions this week, on June 6. The same date in 1945 was a great day for surfing, Happy Birthday, Robert!

What was it like to surf with your father ?

I started surfing with my dad at about 12 years. He trained with the “Duke,” was a lifeguard, swimmer and water polo player in Redondo. He taught me to surf and I ran with it.

What drives you to keep surfing day after day?

It’s a great sport, I can’t imagine not surfing.

What does it feel like to be someone that embodies the essence and spirit of surfing in every way?

I certainly don’t think of it that way! I just love surfing. It’s something that I started doing with my dad and I’ve passed that experience on to my son, too.

What is a typical Robert August day like?

I have a 10 -year-old daughter and we are a family-run business, so my days are full and busy.

Did you think “The Endless Summer” would be an iconic surf movie while making it?

We had no idea the effect that the movie would have on surfing. At the time I thought it was a great opportunity and experience.

What is the Robert August Surf and Turf?

The Robert August Surf&Turf is a Surf/Golf formatted contest.We partner with the Cepia Foundation, a local non- profit group that strives to improve the lives of children in Costa Rica. We have helped raise over $20,000 each year for the past four events.

How did you come up with the idea to start making wine? Can I order it online?

I love wine. Its part of the lifestyle, I enjoy a glass after a day of surf or with dinner. We were approached by someone in the business and it went on from there. I’m not sure if you can order it any where online, but we can help you find it if you’re looking for some.

What is your favorite surf break?

Tamarindo RiverMouth,Tamarindo Cost Rica

What gives a greater fear sharks or cayman (crocodilian reptile)?

I don’t worry about them too much, technically we are in their space. Sometimes you’ll see a cayman at the end of the estuaries in Costa Rica. Just stay clear.

What is a bigger passion in your life surfing or shaping?

It has to be a draw, surfing and the things about it, travel, lifestyle are a passion, but the creativity of shaping and coming up with new ideas is what keeps me in it.

For people that have never owned a Robert August Surfboard, how would you describe the ride?

Robert August designs are user friendly, from beginner to more advanced and they perform well on wide range of surf breaks.

What’s on your schedule for 2010?

I just got back from a great promo in NC last week, I am doing a surf trip/camp thru Baja Surf Adventures to Nicaragua and El Salvador. Surf & Turf is coming up in Jul/Aug and in mid August there is the Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. This is one of my favorite charity events and look forward to it every year. Maybe a trip to Australia?
