What have you been up to? What did you do for Earl?

I have been home for the last month after traveling all summer to Oman, Mexico, and New Zealand. I stayed home for Earl and it was amazing! Lots of really fun barrels.
Going back in time, what made you start surfing?
I always loved looking at magazines and pictures when I was a kid living in Richmond, Va. When I was 9 I moved to the Obx and my uncles gave me a surfboard. I took it out that summer and fell in love.
Do you remember winning your first contest?
Not really, but I do remember winning the Red Bull Ice Break which was the first pro contest I won. It was in Canada, it was really cold, and it felt amazing to win against all my peers who I really respect.
Over the course of your surfing career, you have accomplished a lot, what are a some of your personal highlights?
Getting the cover of Surfer, Surfing, and TW Surf are definitely the highlights. I had a goal to get one major cover but to get all three is just crazy....
Are you still modeling?
No more modeling, but thinking about trying again so my wife doesn't have to work anymore :)
How do you stay balanced and grounded?
Having an amazing wife and friends keeps me in check, but mainly my relationship with God and knowing he loves me no matter what.
What are your thoughts or feelings when you see a huge set coming and you know you are going for it?
I love the feeling when you see a big wave coming! I get all nervous and butterflies in my stomach and am scared but I want to go so bad it motivates me to get over my fear. When you make the wave, it is the best feeling; you just want more
What makes OBX such special place?
It is small and a very tight-knit community. People really care about one another. And the waves get so good!
What is a perfect wave for you?
A peaky, hollow beach break double overhead or bigger. I love beach break barrels!
What is your worst experience/ may be biggest wipeout surfing?
I broke my tib/fib last October pulling into a closeout barrel. I felt and heard my leg snap like a twig. That was awful...
You are a role model to a lot of people, who are your role models?
my wife is the most amazing person I know, but I have a lot of good friends and family to mimic my life after too
What do you have going on for the rest of 2010/2011? Anything you are looking forward to?
I am hanging out at home and going to play some music in 2010 then 2011 maybe make a movie... We'll see, keep you posted
Have you ever surfed Delaware?
I surfed Delaware when I was 14 in the ESA Regionals. It was really small and I did terrible in the contest. I want to come up and redeem my experience there. Maybe next hurricane...

Thanks Jesse for the interview!!
