To say that John Weber is amazingly skilled right now after winning the World Skimboard Championships is misleading.  He has been killing it in the water for years now, and he is only sixteen.  You can spot him catching the longest rides on a skimboard or surfboard and does tricks effortlessly.  He stands out in the water and with his charming personality he wins his peers and public's respect and appreciation.    John is a world class surfer and he is still getting better every day.  Plain and simple he just flows.

Questions:

You skim and surf what did you start doing first and how old where you?  I started skimming when I was 8 or 9 and I started surfing with my dad, he used to paddle with me on the front of the board when I was two or three and he would hold me and surf.  Pretty much after that I surfed and skimming came about one day, I met a few people that skimmed and I started doing it.

Do you have a favorite, skimming or surfing?   I like surfing more, the waves  are longer and can surf bigger waves, but skimming  is still fun, you can skim when there are no waves, instead of being bored sitting at home, you can go out and skim.

How was your summer?  My summer was good, I worked on a fishing boat, I worked pretty much every single day, but I still caught some good waves.

 heard you got first place in the World Skimboard Championships?    it was in Laguna Beach, at Aliso Beach, yeah I got first, I went out there with my friend Max Wheeler, me and him are best friends, he skims too.  He got 2nd in his age group and I got 1st in mine.   

 best skim session ever? Probably days at the Naval Jetty when the waves are really long and a bunch of friends there.,

best surf session ever?  I remember one time going to Mexico and surfing this point with my dad, all alone and we surfed for hours and hours.  It was a right point break, you walk ten miles out to the end of this point, that would have to be the most fun.

worst wipe out?  I hurt my knee one time in Dewey, skimming, I hyper extended it, still hurts today, and that was four or five years ago.  But I've never had any incidents where I was held under or witness death.  Nothing crazy

what other sports do you do?  I used to play Lacrosse, I've played since I was five, all the way to last year and then last year I didn't want to play because it just got to serious, it wasn't for fun anymore.

Who has influenced you,  any favorite surfers or skimmers?  For surfing definitely my dad, cause we always surf together.  If I didn't go out cause it was too big he would encourage me to go out, which has made me better.  Skimboarding, Blair Cherico, owner of Dewey Beach Surf Shop, he kinda got me my first board got me up and running and Jeff Dearie, which was one of Blair's friends and one of my friends, we used to skim Gordon's Pond.  They are the two that have really influenced me the most.

any skimboard tricks that you are working on?  Not really, I want to go to different spots, catch different waves, bigger waves, I want to be able to say I skimmed or surfed that wave.

do surf and skim in the winter?  I surf more in the winter because skimming with a wetsuit its slower and can't get out as far and its not as fun. I like to surf in the winter 

can you describe the feeling of riding a wave?  Its fun, there is nothing like it, kinda like roller coaster, once your done you want to catch another one and another one. Keep doing it.

how would you describe your personality?  I'm easy going, I like to skim contest but I rather skim with friends alone somewhere, just me and them and perfect waves, no one else.

your plans for the winter and the coming year?  I get to go to California this month on the 28th to Balboa, for a contest, near the Wedge in Newport and I hope to go out there and do well and other than that going to Mexico with my dad on a surf trip.

are you going pro?  I'm not sure yet, I haven't decided, I still got a long ways to skim amateur.

anything you would like to add?  Yeah, keep the beaches clean, keep going in the water and respect the ocean......and to the lifeguards, let us surf when there are waves lifeguards didn't let us in the water today!!!

Some of the words that describe George Bryan, including being one of the best skimboarders on earth still in the game today are, compassionate, dedicated, role model, leader of the sport, artist, friend and family man.   With his smooth style of skimboarding and his laid back attitude, he has the respect of all skimboarders.  He is one of the most important people in Skimboarding.

What are you doing in Mexico right now?

Directing the webcast for the Quiksilver Pro. It is so beautiful down here in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and there is just so mush swell in the water. 

How long have you been doing the filming  for the contests?  Do you get to surf and skim?

I started out as a cinematographer with  iTV 360 several years ago. We are a freelance webcast company. Now I am working the switchboard bringing the viewers what they see from our live cameras. This contest we have five cameras, all with replay capabilities. It is great to be able to travel, work, and meet so many cool people.  Yeah, I get to skim and surf.  Yesterday I had one of the best hikes in my life to a secret right hand skim wedge.  The left hand point break has the best sand bar its had in years.  It has been a surreal trip. 

When did you start skimming?

I started skimboarding on records in my living room before I could walk.  I think I was born in the shore breaks of Laguna Beach.

Being one of the best skimmers in the world, who do you look up to?

I actually  look up my mom the most. She was a single parent that raised my brother and I. We had some tough times, but she never let it bring us down. Ever. She taught me a lot about responsibility, appreciation, and caring for my family.

How does a rider excel in skimboarding?  What is the mind frame and what are the physical requirements?

When I learned how to skim, there was not a professional division. I have always just skimmed for the fun of it. I believe that is why I still skim everyday. The requirements are probably most limited to balance and athletic ability. The great part about skimboarding is that waves are free, and many riders are willing to lend their board out to a first timer just to share their stoke.

You are cinematographer. How many skim movies have you made?

About twenty full length DVDs.

What is 10th St. Bros?

A production company that my brother, Bill Bryan, and I started.  We were first motivated to make a skim movie because of the perception that most people had about skimboarding. A perception that skimboarders only spin around the sand on wooden boards. We were doing so much more. Our films quickly gathered a cult following that greatly helped the sport grow. People saw the possibilities, where they could take their riding, and that progression was inevitable. 

Some people say you and your brother are responsible for the Solag skim movement. 

We were definitely not the first skimboarders in Solag. There was a group of core guys that we greatly respected. But the only way to watch them was to live around Laguna. We made videos that people could see from their living rooms anywhere in the world. People began getting into skimboarding from watching it in a movie. They saw how much fun it was and that they may have a good break in their own neighborhood. 

Where are you favorite skimming waves?

My favorite waves are large ones. I mean, I would say that right now I am more into pushing the limits as far as riding the largest barrels. Where perhaps in the past it was more about pushing the limits with technical tricks. But mostly, I really start out by looking at the shape of a wave first.  A good wave at any size will make for a good session.

I know you had some knee injuries.  How are you?  Does it affect the way you ride now?

I try not to think about it when I am riding. But sometimes in the middle of a big air you have some time to think about the risk to reward ratio.  Surgery, rehab, losing money, and missing swells can all be very unpleasant. I stretch well before I ride and make sure to listen to my body when it needs a day off.  I have gone to riding a board with Xtrak traction across the deck of the board for the best grip for my feet.

How much surfing do you do?

Surfing is something that everyone should do. There are so many positive aspects. The amount of surfing I do really changes from year to year, but right now I am definitely excited to get out there when the surf is up.

Whats the name of your latest movie?  What locations and riders are featured in it?  

El Nino is the 2010 release by Tenth Street Bros. It is one of my favorites. The film covers the skimboarding during the 2009/2010, El Nino year. We had swells around the globe that were larger and more consistent than I can ever remember. My brother and I spent a combined 3 months in Mexico chasing waves. The film also includes footage from Hurricane Bill,  which sent the East Coast of the United States its best waves in years. Many people consider a barrel that was ridden by Bill Bryan to be the largest skimboarding barrel in Florida ever. My brother and I also tow into  the largest swell of the year in California. The film combines more great waves, epic personalities, great looking beach goers, and family fun than any before.

Will skimboarding ever be mainstream?

I hope it will not be considered mainstream. That sounds so contradictory to what we do. I think skimming needs to grow with the leadership of longtime members of the skim community. Respect is so important in skimboarding. Without it, you just have a bunch of kids running into each other to get another picture on facebook.

The progression of skimboarding has really exploded with some of the new riders.  Where do you think the future of skimboarding is going in regards to  bigger waves, bigger technical tricks,  remote locations, etc.

Definitely more technical tricks. What I saw as possible on a skimboard while growing up was turns and flips. Now kids start skimboarding knowing that kickflips and 720 shuvits are possible. I know that there is at least one more level of tricks that will be coming soon. Soon, people will be able to do tricks like rodeos, Kerrupt flips, and varial flips back toward the beach. 

Who do you skim with?

I mostly skim with the Solag crew.   I really just enjoy riding with anyone who wants to have some laughs.

Best memories hanging in DE?  Best session?

Oh, the memories. The people in Dewey have always been so cool and willing to help us out, whether it is a board to ride or a home cooked meal. My best session was the first time I skimmed at the Indian River Inlet.  I had heard so many bad things about the waves on the East Coast, and after getting several in-n-outs in my first session, I knew skimming in Delaware was going to stay. 

Will you be coming to the East Coast Skim Championships?

I certainly hope so. I have been invited out by the good people at Alley Oop. Harry Wilson and SKIM USA have done such an amazing job making that contest an integral part of a Delaware summer. Great people getting together for a good cause. I hope the community leaders realize just how important skimboarding is to Dewey Beach. Unfortunately, often times it seems like they don't. The way skimboarders and other good kids are treated by the life guards and police that walk the streets is ridiculous.

As skimboarding gains popularity on our beaches and while our professional skimmers work hard to promote and progress the sport, we can't forget Francis Walsh, a pioneer in skimboarding and one of the first surfers in Dewey Beach. Francis has paved the road for generations to come, with his dedication, determination,amazing style in both sports and a charismatic personality. A true local, true waterman and a good friend to many, Walsh is the Original Classic!


You were born and raised in DE and your family has roots since the 30s in Dewey Beach, How was growing up in Dewey as the youngest son and from an original local family? Yeah! born and raised right there, back then there weren’t a lot of original people, actually, you know, there was only four or five families that lived in Dewey, so we grew up just a couple of people,my brothers and sisters, we usually hung out, there was not a whole lot of people to chill with, not a lot of people skimming, nobody surfing, we really didn’t have anybody to watch, there wasn’t anybody else doing it. We were the first people skimming and surfing on that beach. and you had the breaks to your selves......totally (laughs) that's not good!

You surf and skim, what did you start doing first? I started skimming first.

Who got you into water sports? at what age? My brothers and sisters at age, four or five, those guys always went down to the beach, and skimmed on plywood skimmers, they would go up to the house, cut one out with a jig saw and rout it, no glass, no nothing on it, just paint it and run down there and use it until it de-lam (delaminate). I would pick it up when they were done and start fooling around. Then a guy from Dewey that owned a place next to the Exxon gas station, Russ’s Surf Shack was probably one of the first guys who got, real Vics, glassed Victoria's into his shop that were all wood and we started seeing what some of those guys were doing out west just on poster and photos, we started taking off with it and doing our own thing.

You have made movies, been in contests, travels around the word, what was that like? Yeah I made a couple little videos, contests yeah, a lot of traveling with Harry Wilson and those guys, it was pretty wild, we traveled because we were promoting skimming, no body really knew about it, so we would go to a beach, me a Dave Crowley. Harry Wilson would throw us in a truck, we would drive 15 to 20 hours sometimes, unload the truck and set up a little demo on the beach. Dave and I would skim and try to promote it in a lot of the big surf contests, we would come in and do our little promo, try to get the word out about skimming. It caught on apparently, there is a lot of people skimming on the beach now!

Whats in your quiver? How many boards do you have? Right now, 5 surfboards, 2 skimmers.

What are your thoughts on the skim community today? Its amazing, I really don’t keep close tabs on it, a couple of the guys that are local, Jim Weber's little boy, he has been tearing it up so I’ve been keeping tabs on him, and if any of the local boys start getting up on the top then I’ll sneak down and take a peek at them when they are in the pro heat. All and all I really don’t keep on top of it, I probably should, its kind of like it already hatched and its a chicken now, so I just let it roll.

Why do you think skimboarding has not made it mainstream? I really don’t know how to answer that question, nobody really gave it 100% of the respect that is due,because it's not a really up in front, in your face kind of sport. A lot of guys are just skimming little waves, it could definitely become a mainstream sport but I don’t think it would be good for it, I like it grass roots, the way it is now, it's more laid back and mellow, it will probably take off but its going to change the whole aspect of it. The skim community is very close-knit, doesn’t matter what town, state or country, everybody knows each other. Exactly, and that is awesome, and when it goes mainstream its going to be a bunch of stuff that it probably doesn’t need, I like it just the way it is, like you say very connected.

Did you know that a lot of the pro skimmers look up to you, and they call you “The man”,”The Legend”, they say you have the best front side steeze (style)? how do you feel about that? (laughs) ..... Just a lot of skimming, skimming, skimming, in Dewey that's all we had to ride on, primarily it broke right, a regular foot was pretty natural for a right sided wave, I actually double sided, I would ride front side both ways for a while, then I got to where I could ride backside left. A lot of the guys that are pros now, were kids, Jason (Jdub) and those boys were tini, when we were in our first contest, they were two and three, I got to see Joey V, (Vavala) at the beach the other day, we hung out for a little while and I watch him skim, and those guys are doing good, they are tearing it up, makes me happy to see those guys rippin’ it and to have those guys’s respect its a good thing.


Best skim session in DE? where, when, how was it? Oh boy! that was probably, I have to break out the album! looking at early 80s in Dewey, late September, big south swell, 75 to 150 yard liners, just get in and get stuffed, get barreled, spit back out,and just work it to the inside, sometimes the only thing you could do was line it, cause it was just lined up, it got so big, it got past the point of skimming and we had to plop our boards on the beach, and run up the street to the house as fast as we could to get our surfboards.

Best surf session in DE? where, when, how was it? Definitely South side, around the same period, may be a little bit later, around 88 or 89 may be 90 big south swell, south side, no more needs to be said, big shacks!.

How does someone progress in water sports? Practice,you get it in your head as soon as you get the bug, and if you stick with it, keep rocking,you keep on it, keep on fresh boards, good fresh equipment, that's is not out dated, and keep riding, that's 98% of it.

How much importance does knowing the ocean and how it works influence your progression?. Immensely, total 100%, if you know you can look at the ocean and gage what going on, it saves time, from going place to place, specially growing up right on the beach like I did,we didn’t have cars to get anywhere we gaged what we saw, to either go south or north. and skate there? ( laughs) yeah, skate, walk, skim, or bum a ride from the older guys.

Heard you have done some commercial fishing, and that you almost went out in one of the other boats when the Andrea Gale disappeared, is that true? Actually the Andrea Gale was one of the boats that was in the fleet. Bob Brown from the Perfect Storm , that was the fleet that he owned, we were on the boat called the Hanna Boden (female capt boat), we knew a couple of the guys that were on the Andrea Gale and the Monica Gale. So it is definitely true, I did it for about a year, it was brutal, you can see that stuff on TV now, with all the crabbers and long liners, and that's for real. All the boats were stationed in Marblehead Mass. we fished a couple of trips to the Grand Banks and Georgia Banks, then we took the boat down to Haiti up in the Bahamian channel, and I got off the boat before it went to the Panama canal on to the west coast.


could you live away from the ocean? Absolutely not, NO WAY

When was your last surfing session, how was it? today and it was pretty good, it was fun.


What advice can you give the next generation of local surfers and skimmers? Stay in school, get your education, stay healthy, skim and surf a lot and mind your manners when you are in the water.

if it was crowded in the water would you block for me so I can catch more waves? (laughs) you know I would!

Do you plan on surfing forever? as long as I can, no doubt about it, till the body gives out, and that usually happens before the spirit goes.

21 Questions with Jason "Jdub" Wilson

Welcome to Dewey Beach, East Coast Capital of Skimboarding.  Over time skimboard construction and design has evolved to higher levels, from plain flat pieces of plywood to high performance materials and shapes, allowing boards to be lighter, faster and stronger.  Right now in Delaware beaches the level of riding is unbelievable, great athletes are pushing the sport and one of them is Jason Wilson.  At  7:44am last Wednesday I got a text message from Jason saying "we are grinching today".  The Grinch, is a machine that allows a rider to be towed from just about any angle into the waves.   I've been wanting to take some photos of him skimming for the paper but unfortunately I was not able to that day.

With a super busy schedule, travels around the world and outstanding skimboarding, Jason stays a laid back guy, easy going and down to earth.  Even though I didn't get to take the photos this past week I was able to catch up with him in Dewey and ask a few questions.

1. When did you start skimming and what moment did you realize you were going to skim professionally?

 I started skimming when I was about 5 or 6. My father owned a Skimboard company when I was growing up so we always had boards laying around. I probably started carpet skimming, then just playing in the sand with my board before eventually joining up with the rest of the skim kids in Dewey and then hitting the beach all day everyday in the summer.

2. What was it like growing up in Dewey?

Growing up in Dewey was great in the summer and really boring in the winter time. In the summer it's warm, there's lots of shore break, and stuff to do around town. I always enjoyed my skim buddies who would come to Dewey in the summer. As I got older I definitely enjoyed the Dewey night life and all the good times that come with that. I think growing up in a town like Dewey has had a lot to do with who I am today.  

3.What drives you to keep skimming everyday year after year.....besides your car?

 I just really enjoy being in the water and being active. I love the feeling of gliding across the water and reacting to whatever the ocean throws at me. I strive for forward movement and progression in life so it's really fun to continue skimming and try to get better at riding all types of waves.

4.What is a regular Jason Wilson day like?

Well.... I usually wake up and check the waves and my email. Drink some tea and stretch out so I can function. If the waves are ok I try to get a session in, if they are not so good I usually hit the computer and work.  In the summer I have to run Alley-Oop Skim camp and shop with my friend Corey, so that usually takes up most of my day. If I'm not skimming I am usually working at progressing Alley-Oop or working with my main sponsor Zap Skimboards. I usually check the waves again in the afternoon to see if they have changed. I Pretty much eat, work, skim, and try to hang with my friends everyday. 

5. How many contest do you do a year?

 I have been competing on the pro tour for over 10 years doing 8-10 events per year.

6. Why do you think skimboarding has not reached mainstream levels, and would you want it to?

This is a hard question. I think mainly because many people have not been exposed to the high level of skimming that is going on today. Skimmers riding waves and busting out skate style tricks in the water. Many people simply view it as that kid sliding on his wooden board in the flat water. Hopefully as the media continues to get better we can overcome the view and expose the exciting level that skimming has reached today. 7. How do you make money in the skimboarding world, besides contests?

I make money mainly through running my business Alley-Oop which is based around skimming. We do Skim camps , lessons, and guided travel. We also have a great skim shop in Dewey Beach and online at alleyoopskim.com. I also have a few supportive sponsors that I have been working with for years. Some of them give me a salary, photo incentives, travel budgets and other types of support to keep me doing my thing on my board. 

8. Do you live in Dewey year around?

 Dewey is pretty much my home base but I try to get out of here as much as possible in the winter to travel to warmer skim locations. I usually spend a couple months in Eleuthera, Bahamas where my family lives most of the year now. I gotta  be able to get in the water! The cold weather just takes it out of me these days. It's not good for my mind or body.

9. What are your favorite places to skim around the world?

I love Cabo San Lucas and Laguna Beach. They have great consistent skim and you can almost always score some fun waves on a trip to either place. Recently though I have had the bug to explore new places. I just got back from my first trip to Brazil and it was absolutely amazing! Great waves, people, and scenery. I'm hoping to hit the Philippines, Africa, and possibly Sri lanka in the next few years.

10. Do you think people in other countries support skimboarding more than in the USA?

No, I think the USA plays the biggest part in skimming right now. It's mainly American companies making the best boards, supporting events, and professional riders. There is a big skim movement in many other countries and it seems to be getting bigger and bigger year after year. 

11. What advice do you have for upcoming skimmers who want to take the their riding to a professional level?

I would say hold onto your dream and go for it. Skimming has brought me a lot of enjoyment in life and taken me to places I never would of had the opportunity to travel to. Unfortunately right now it's hard to make a full time living just being a pro skimmer. You gotta have another hustle or job to help pay the bills. Go to school, get a degree, and don't put your eggs all in one basket. 

12. The ladies want to know if there is a special someone?

Haha. There definitely is. I have been in a relationship for about 5 years with one of my best friends Trisha. We went through some tough times this past year which I think all real relationships do at some point, but we're back on track and I'm very happy to have such a beautiful person in my life.

13. Do you take part in any efforts to keep the beaches clean? what do you think about the oil spill going on right now?

Yeah, definitely. I always try to pick up trash. We teach our kids at skim camp to leave your area at the beach cleaner than when you got there. We took part in the beach clean up this year that is done all over the world. The oil spill is just awful. I am very worried about the effects that is going to have on a big portion of the ocean and coastal areas of the US.

14. What is your greatest fear?

Wow... My greatest fear.... I don't like moths and butterflies, ha ha. Kinda weird but they just creep me out. I guess I'm always a little fearful of not attaining certain goals I set for myself with my business and life. Not a huge fear but something that definitely keeps me working hard.

15. Favorite move in the water to pull?

I like riding long liners and just carving along the waves. I'm not a very technical skimmer. I just enjoy getting barreled and styling out.

16. Are you working on any new tricks right now?

Not really.... I do wanna land a kick flip on my skimboard. Not many people have done them. I got it once, but I know I can do it better and get more consistent with it.

17. Whats the worst you have ever skimmed?

Last year when my back was all messed up I tried to do a film trip in California and I just could not skim comfortably. I was in so much pain. Had to pop pills just to make it through the day. That trip led to a 3-4 month battle with sciatica in my left leg caused from degenerated discs in my back, spinal stenosis, and early stage arthritis. I could not skim all last winter. 

18. Whats the best you have ever skimmed?

There have been a lot of memorable sessions and contests. I could not put a finger on the best one. Anytime I'm with my friends skimming some glassy waves is nice.

19. Best day of your life?

Graduating college was a pretty great day. Winning the East Coast tour in my home town of Dewey a few summers back was awesome! Every day is pretty good though. Lately I have been really trying to just appreciate life, being healthy, and just being happy with simple pleasures. Trying to make everyday the best day.

20. Do you tweet?

No tweeting for me. But I do hit Facebook pretty hard. Mobile uploads and all that stuff. If your my friend you pretty much know what I'm doing most days through FB and definitely get to see pictures of all the great meals I eat.
